Question How long do mealworms last?

So, I live in a small town with no petstore, so I would need to get them from the city 3 hours away. How long do mealworms live, and can I make them live longer? Do they need to be kept in a fridge? I was wondering because I cant be going to the city every week or so if they die... we dont go often, like every 2-3 months. Do crickets last longer then, if a giant thing of mealworms isnt an option? Thanks!

Mealworms can last that long if they are kept at the right temperatures. Many keep them in the refrigerator but I have found that mine is way too cold and seems to kill them off. I have setup a second mini fridge that keeps them at 50 degrees and it does a good job of slowing down their growth into beetles. Just take them out once every 2 weeks for 24 hours and allow them some veggies and you'll be good to go.

Great info! Thank you! Also, just wondering, do you know any websites that will ship mealworms to Canada, just as a backup so I know that I can always get food? I cant get a leopard gecko until I'm sure that I can supply food for the little guy, I want to be a good owner

There's a site called bugorder.com that's in Alberta (Morinville). Not sure how far that is away from you. Hopefully, that'll help.

No problem. Glad I could help. Also, you might want to google "mealworms in Canada" you might be able to find a better deal. I've never used them(bugorder.com), since I don't live in Canada. I used Grubco when I bought mealworms. Now, I just raise my own. It's much easier and cheaper. Good luck with your search.

    Goodluck

I usually buy 500 mealworms at a time for a couple leos, and about 25 out of the 500 die. Mine usually last about 2 months before they're all eaten.

I admire this statement. So many people just decide on a whim that they're going to get a leopard gecko, and they do very little research or planning. Sadly, I've even seen people on here that obviously weren't very prepared ahead of time at all. They come here for advice after the fact, which I guess is better than nothing.

    So kudos to you!

Yeah, I havent even been on this forum long and I see alot of people like that, who have no idea what they're getting into when they get a leo. Some people just arent mature enough I think to have pets, you can spot them a mile away when they tlk lyk dis. :P Thanks!

They'll last a while in the fridge, but consider breeding them. A few months ago, I dumped 100 mealworms in a rubbermaid tub with some whole wheat flour, and a little carrot or lettuce every week. Now I have small mealworms (some tiny, some feeder size) all over the tub.
