Looking to buy first leaf tailed gecko

I live in Southern California and I'm trying to find a leaf tailed gecko for sale. I saw a white one that had orange eyes with red veining at LLLReptile (reptile store). When I checked back they had sold it. They labeled it as "giant leaf tailed gecko" but I believe there's probably a more specific name for it.

In any case, if anyone can lead me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. I'm serious so if you're selling you can msg me.

I'm no stranger to forums, but I'm new to this one. This is my first post. If I get this reptile I'm sure I'll post many more. I have a bearded dragon so if there's anyone local who'd like to trade that could work too. I'm selling it one way or another.

Uroplatus fimbriatus are "Giant Leaf Tailed Geckos". That is their common name, and what we had at our store recently. We do get in all kinds of leaf tailed geckos, although they are becoming harder and harder to get. Very few people actually breed Uroplatus species, so generally you will be dealing with an imported gecko. Keep an eye on our website, as it is updated every day. If we get more, they will be listed there. Otherwise, you can always look around kingsnake for a good dealer with any in stock. Mossy Leaf Tailed Geckos and Satanic Leaf Tailed Geckos are my personal favorites, so you might check those out as well. Good luck!

Greetings Scott,

Thanks for the reply. I go to the Oceanside location frequently for supplies and I check the website.

I'm pretty set on the giant one - coolest looks i.m.o....I like Satantics but I wanted a larger uroplatus.

Whats this "kingsnake" you mentioned?

Great store btw, i recommend anyone who has reptiles shop there. Fantastic prices, great selection and a very helpful staff.

Thx for the info Amped H.

I've been reading that this is a very delicate species.

Any input on having a leaftail shipped cross country? Thats a hefty price for a carcass if you know what I mean.

Thx

Well the geckos are shipped over night. Most breeders and dealers will not ship during certain parts of the year. So now would not be a very good time to buy them, unless it is locally. Leaf tails are very prone to stress and shipping creates a great amount of stress. So the days after arrival are the most important for acclimation, hydration, and to reduce their stress. Most available Leaf Tails are Wild Caught and if you want CB be willing to pay more, but I think the extra money is well worth it for the healthy captives over imports. Uros are very delicate species and dehydration is one of the major problems with them, so you need to check your humidity often. In my opinion the first few weeks are the hardest, but once they are acclimated and feeding they become quite hardy geckos. I would do my research on them before getting my feet wet though. This should get you in the right way. http://www.geckosunlimited.com/comm...os-uroplatus/15321-uroplatus-care-sheets.html

i do hope you realise that all leaf tailed gecko species are endangered purely because of the pet trade, in buying and owning one without breeding and re-releasing, you are contributing to their demise. Leaf tailed geckos are indigenous to Madagascar and can only truly survive there.

That's actually not completely correct. Although collection does affect wild populations it's a much more minor degree than that of habitat destruction. The main reason for Uroplatus wild population decline is habitat destruction due to human expansion and deforestation. Those who keep Uroplatus in captivity and breed the species are doing their part to ensure their existence in the future when there may not be habitat available for them to inhabit in the wild. Leaf tailed geckos do extremely well in the correct captive environments and can be bred with dedication and attention to detail. Instead of condemning those who keep a species in captivity that is threatened in the wild perhaps you should gather all the facts and support those who are willing to put the effort into preserving them.
