Gecko Morph

Hey guys, this is the leopard gecko/african fat tail gecko I rescued from one of the local pet shop today. The pet owner decided to give it to me after numeral times of bad shed. I have successfully removed the skin shed from the head and one of the front limbs. I will continue to removed the skin shed for the other three limbs tonight as it looked exhausted from the handling this morning. I'm not sure if this is a leopard gecko or an african fat tail. Can you guys help, perhaps with the type of morph?

Glad you got him...I'd say it's a fat tail but didn't the pet store have any information on what he's trying to sell to you?

Most of the gecko that I saw at his shop were leopard gecko. There were a few gecko with the morphs that are not known to me as I only have little knowledge on other gecko morph. Anyway, thanks for the info. Hopefully I will be able to save this little fella.

EDIT: Trashing this post. I don't know what that is. It looks like it's the wrong shape to be a fat tail (it always appeared to me that fat tails have shorter tails than leopard geckos, and that one you have has a long tail even for a leopard gecko), but the coloring is weird for a leopard gecko. It looks like it could be a reverse stripe of some kind if it's a leopard gecko and the malnutrition could be messing with the colors.

Aliza raises fat tails, so maybe she can chime in.

DOUBLE EDIT: Deleted an important part of my post. You should be careful because that gecko could possibly have crpyto/other parasites. Handle this one last when maintaining your reptiles (not sure what else you have) and use very good sanitary practices. You don't want to spread any potential disease to your healthy animals.

Yup I sterilized all my tools and hands after handling it, the shed at its toes are quite bad. I'm still having trouble removing it. Now I'm putting it in an enclosure with damp coco peat in hope of softening it's dry shed. Didn't know that hybridization in between leopard gecko and African fat tail gecko could happen. Do you have any suggestion in aiding the removal of the shed?

Hybridization can't happen. I didn't mean to imply that it could. What I meant is I can't tell what species that is because of its condition. I sort of think it's a leopard gecko. It just doesn't look like the right shape for a fat tail.

I usually use tweezers with really bad stuck shed. I soak for a long while in lukewarm water and use tweezers (like the kind meant for pulling eyebrow hairs) and gently work it off. This can take quite a long time and is a delicate process that requires a steady hand and careful eye. Just be patient and gentle and keep soaking so the shed tears easily.

I agree that it definitely is shaped like a leopard gecko but the coloring reminds me of a whiteout fat tail. I recommend posting another picture when you've gotten the shed off and after it's gained some weight. Some leopard geckos end up with weird coloring when they're malnourished and it may look a lot different after it gets a little healthier.

Just back from field trip. My brother and I have been hand feeding it for one week now and it's eating two mealworms per day. The dry shed at the toes have soften up and appeared to be transparent. However, I'm still having difficulty removing the shed from some of the toes.Today, I noticed one small bump near to the lower jaw. I've done some research online and found out that it could be tumor caused by the stuck shed. Will it disappears by itself or do I have to do something about it?

Their is so many things it could be from being malnourished and lacking vitamins, keep taking good care of it and make sure you dust with calcium w/D3 and hopefully it will recover, if it's still their after he looks better you should maybe see a specialist vet. Good luck!!

In the latest picture it looks like a reverse stripe albino Mack snow leopard gecko. Keep up the good work.

Will definitely do that. I guess we will all have to wait for this little fella to grow bigger and healthier before we can confirm which gecko it actually is. Currently both of its eyes are still closed. Could there be any remaining shed that stuck in the eyes that caused this problem? On the first day when I got it right after I removed the shed from its head, it opened its eyes slightly and it's red in colour (not the dark red kind, but quite a bright one). After that day, it only opens its eyes by a little once in a while.

If its eyes are red it is an eclipse as well. It may be uncomfortable in bright light. There certainly may be stuck shed in the eyes. Wash them gently with warm water and a cotton swab. Sometimes you can get a drop of water to sit right on the eye and it may help the gecko to open it.

It could be an abscess (it's hard to see in the picture). I recommend that you keep an eye on it and if it gets bigger or looks as if there's pus in there, consider seeing if you can find a vet. Otherwise, I don't think you have to worry about it.

Latest picture of it! I'm starting to think that he/she is a Mack Snow Reverse Stripe Eclipse.

Definitely an albino because he/she has red eyes. Too bad that its left eye is not opening and appeared to be white when it opened. There is no exotic pet vet nearby me. So, I'm trying to soothe the eye with saline eye drop.
