Keeping Mealworms as Long as Possible

Because Internet insects are so much less expensive, I was hoping to go that route next time. But for mealworms, that means purchasing 500 at a time, and I only have one little gecko! Initially for saving on shipping costs, I was hoping to get 100 phoenix worms, and 500 mealworms. I know this might just not be possible with their little bug life-spans.

I wanted to ask if I should purchase a size or two smaller of the worms to buy more time to use them over the course of 3 months or so (so far 100 large ones have lasted us 3-4 weeks). I do currently refrigerate the worms to help with this too.

For the meantime, I'm not really interested in breeding feeders; I also hate crickets and am grossed out by roaches, so will probably stick to the calci worm and mealworm route for now.

Thanks for any suggestions!

It does make sense to get the smaller ones in order to have more time before they morph, and, as you know, refrigerating helps too.
