Meal worm attacks.

Has anyone else ever lost a hatching to mealworms? I'm guessing the one time it's happened to me my gecko must have died in the rack and then the meal worms ate it, but either way it was really disturbing.

Anyone else heard or seen this?

I never heard of it, but wouldn't really doubt it. For my breeder females I put pink mice in their dishes with the mealies. They usually eat them right away, but if they don't notice them, well the mealies go to town :(

I don't believe mealworms can harm a hatchling. First of all, their mouthparts are simply too small to do any real damage, especially lethal damage. Also, mealworms are far too slow moving to be able to kill a gecko, even a hatchling. I strongly believe that the hatchling died, and afterwards the mealworms were possibly feeding on it. I have never had it happen before. I'm sorry to hear about your baby.

All very good points, Jacqueline, thanks. It seems it must have just died and all the worms jumped out of the dish to eat him. Very odd.
