Shedding

Hi I'm new here we have had our boy for a couple of weeks not sure of his age as a friend had him but wasnt caring for him properly so we took him on he shed yesterday but his tail shed didnt come off like it should have and he has just come out of his hide and he dropped his tail we are gutted as he was doing so much better since we got him sorted out his viv properly correct temps better food and everything and cannot understand why he has dropped it he hasnt been stressed and isnt handled to much so we are confused and heartbroken as to why this would happen straight after a shed

What substrate is he on and what was he on when you got him? I agree it's unusual for a gecko to lose a tail for no reason. Perhaps he had some trauma while he was shedding?
