i cant figure out the avatars

i was trying make my own from one of my pics but it said the image was to large.
why?i put the URL in like it said to

Fred, do you know what size the image is that you're trying to set as your avatar? Avatars can't be more than ... "The maximum size of your custom image is 160 by 160 pixels or 24.4 KB (whichever is smaller)." So you might have to resize it.
