Males or Females???

Any of you experienced leopard gecko owners have a preference of females versus males as pets?

I have heard that males grow larger than females but are more tame, whereas females are smaller but more aggressive. How true is this?

Are females less handleable than males?

I am considering either getting a juvenile lone male or a juvenile pair of females. Any other thoughts?

THANKS!!!:afro:

Sex doesn't make much difference as far as temperament goes. I have some geckos of both sexes that are sweet as pie, and others that are the devil in gecko clothing.

So long as you put forth the time and effort to acclimate your gecko to handling, you shouldn't have a problem. Some geckos just don't like to be handled period, but they are a very small minority.

As far as what to get, just buy whatever makes you happy. Let it be known that once you start, you can't stop. These little guys are addictive!

I agree. Both males and females make equally nice pets, and temperment will vary for each individual gecko. If kept as pets only, non-egg laying females should be able to live as long as males.

  • Are you looking for a male or female leopard gecko? This may only be important to you if you are thinking about breeding leopard geckos down the road. Males can periodically be a bit more expensive to purchase and not as easy to find sometimes. The average life expectancy of male geckos tends to be a bit higher than that of female geckos.

That should answer your questions.
