Number of geckos in a tank

I currently have a rack system full of 12 leopard geckos. My intent was for them to breed but they aren't producing. My question is , how many geckos can I put in a 40 gallon breeder? I have 3 males and 9 females . I know that males can't be housed together so I will have to purchase 3 tanks at least.

Assuming a 40 breeder is 36"x18" foot print, I think you would be okay keeping a 1.3 group in one. Especially if you "build up" with ledges, hides, etc, to give more added area.
