I haven't painted directly on a bulb before; but I've spray painted a sheet of overlay, and fixed it on the fixture below the white bulb. It worked ok as a red filter.

Red car bulb paint doesn't exist? The bulbs aren't painted, the plastic housing for the break lights is simply dyed red. Putting paint on a lightbulb is just asking for trouble. The heat would probably burn the paint and make noxious fumes, definitely not a good thing for any kind of animal including humans.

Infrared bulbs at a hardware store are cheap. You should definitely go buy one.
