I've been doing a lot of reading lately about monitors..lol I'm looking to diversify my collection a little bit and I'm finding the active nature with monitors intriguing.

Like the title mentions if I get into monitors I'm only going start with the pygmy monitors. I think the small size of these animals is what I find appealing. Miniature Komodo dragons :) I was pretty convinced I wanted to get some v.kingorums but now that I've been doing more reading I'm starting to lean more towards v.pilbara. All of this is beside the point of my question though..lol

I've seen a lot of pics of enclosures with wood steps (plywood) used for basking and hiding spots. Is there a reason why people use wood over other materials? I'm guessing it is mostly due to cost and durability. I was picturing for my self something a little more natural looking. I was thinking about using maybe thin pieces of slate or rock of some sort to build the steps out of. If this is a bad idea for some reason I'd like to know.
