It means the user is in "Invisible" mode.

This is probably a stupid question, but if you in invisible mode and you have an asterisk behind your name, then are you still invisible ? ......

Rick... only staff can still see which members are logged in under invisible mode...hence why marcia, kelli and whoever else is staff can see the * after a member's name.. while us regular members dont see anything.. just people who are logged in under normal mode..
